MCPS to Help Raise Cancer Awareness on Friday

The Paint Branch Athletic Department and basketball coaches, Walter Hardy and Heather Podosek, invite all Montgomery County Public Schools basketball coaches to support our efforts in raising cancer awareness and the importance of cancer research by wearing suits and sneakers to basketball games on the night of January 30, 2009.

Next weekend, February 1-3, NCAA coaches will be doing the same as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program.  If your school chooses to participate and collect donations, they can be sent directly to the Jimmy V or Kay Yow foundations for cancer research.  Below are details of our Cancer Awareness Night at Paint Branch:

The Paint Branch Athletic Department is hosting a Cancer Awareness Night as part of our varsity basketball doubleheader vs. Kennedy HS on Friday, January 30. The girls game tips off at 5:15, followed by the boys game at 7:00.

The event has even more significance with the passing of legendary North Carolina State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow, who died at 66 Saturday morning after fighting ****** cancer for two decades.

“It shed a whole new light on the event now,” Paint Branch Athletic Director Jeff Sullivan said. “This is something we should do and get the kids involved in the cause.”

Paint Branch’s night will feature:

1)    Boys and Girls players wearing pink headbands, pink shoelaces, and pink warm-up shirts
2)    Coaches wearing suits with sneakers (As part of the college basketball coaches Suits and Sneakers program)
3)    PB Cheerleaders and Pantherettes wearing pink
4)    Halftime promotions
5)    Public service announcements throughout the evening about cancer prevention and research
6)    Honoring staff members who have battled cancer or been impacted by it
7)    All donations will be given to the Jimmy V and Kay Yow foundation for cancer research

We invite you to join us and wear pink to the game.  Thank you for your support.

In the words of Jimmy Valvano “Don’t Give Up…Don’t Ever Give Up!”
